Live Training & Education

To support the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct ("OCRSM")’s main mission of fostering learning and working environments free from all forms of discrimination and harassment, OCRSM conducts compliance training presentations, both in person and virtually, on a variety of topics for offices, departments, and student groups across campus. From July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, OCRSM conducted a total of 175 compliance training presentations and trained an estimated number of 4,261* students, staff, and faculty across campus on topics related to Title IX and civil rights education and response.

* Presentations and training topics ranged from OCRSM overview, UMD Title IX/Civil Rights overview, supportive measures overview, pregnant and parenting student resources, and others. These presentations were hosted for a variety of students, staff, and faculty through graduate student orientations, faculty, and staff meetings, and others.

** OCRSM facilitated a variety of trainings and presentations for groups on campus on topics such as healthy/unhealthy relationship signs, setting boundaries and practicing open communication, navigating difficult situations in the workplace, and others, upon request. This number includes presentations OCRSM facilitated for UNIV100 courses in Fall 2024.


Campus-Wide Awareness Events

As part of its educational and outreach initiatives in the last year, OCRSM hosted, sponsored, and/or participated in a total of 52 campus-wide events. This included tabling at resource fair events, co-sponsoring campus-wide initiatives, and facilitating workshops. These initiatives reached an estimated number of 11,351+ students, staff, and faculty.

* OCRSM participated in and/or sponsored events with campus partners such as the Sexual Assault Prevention Committee (SAPC), Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence (CARE), Title IX Student Advisory Board (TIXSAB), Bias Incident Support Services (BISS), Graduate Student Government (GSG), One Love UM, Rights & Responsibilities (R&R) in the Department of Resident Life, and others.

** OCRSM participated in campus-wide initiatives such as the My Maryland Fair New Student Orientations and campus resource fairs hosted by a variety of colleges and departments at the beginning of both the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. OCRSM also participated in the New Faculty Orientation Information Fair, Fall Welcome FreeFest, First Look Fair, Quelcome, Self-Care Fair, and others.

A signature event that OCRSM hosts is "Tea with Title IX." This is an annual meet-and-greet event that occurs during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April that welcomes the campus community to stop by and interact with the members of OCRSM while enjoying refreshments. For this event, OCRSM prepared 100 self-care kits for attending participants to take home.


Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) April 2025

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (“SAAM”) is an annual national campaign that occurs in April to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. The Sexual Assault Prevention Committee ("SAPC"), which is co-chaired by Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence ("CARE") and OCRSM, leads and gathers representatives from student organizations and departments across campus to come together and create a calendar of events for this campus-wide initiative. The theme for SAAM in April 2025 was TEAL, which stands for Togetherness, Empowerment, Advocacy, and Learning. Each event that was part of SAAM 2025 had a TEAL campaign theme. Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) Calendar of Events

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) Flyer

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) Flyer

Summary: This flyer was utilized as a centralized method to spread awareness around the TEAL campaign for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2025. This advertisement was utilized in screens and bulletin boards in the dining and residence halls, the Adele H. Stamp Student Union, the Shuttle UM buses, and other campus locations, as well as posted widely via social media* and campus newsletters**.

*Instagram was the main social media platform that was utilized to post advertisements around SEES. OCRSM partnered with organizations and departments such as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, CARE, One Love UM, Preventing Sexual Assault (PSA), Student Government Association (SGA), and others to post advertisements around the survey via social media. 

**Campus newsletters hosted by departments and organizations were mainly utilized to post advertisements around the survey. These departments and organizations included, but were not limited to: the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, CARE, Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL), Fostering Terps Success, the LGBTQ+ Equity Center, the Department of Resident Life, the Department of Transportation Services, and others.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) October 2024

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (“DVAM”) is an annual national campaign to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to raise awareness of the potential signs of domestic violence. The SAPC, which is co-chaired by CARE and OCRSM, leads and gathers representatives from student organizations and departments across campus to come together and create a calendar of events for this campus-wide initiative.

Workshops Hosted by the OCRSM

OCRSM hosted a series of hour-long lunch & learn workshops for the campus community during the fall and spring semesters of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Each lunch & learn workshop focused on a different theme, and the interactive workshops allowed for conversations around healthy and unhealthy signs for different types and aspects of relationships. Affirmation Art: Crafting Awareness and Understanding of Relationship Abuse

Summary: This workshop aimed to educate and bring awareness to students and community about the different types of relationship/dating abuse. Such as verbal, physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental abuse. Relationship abuse can show in many forms, it is important to recognize that it goes beyond physical abuse for early signs to leave an unhealthy relationship.

How to Help a Friend: Lunch & Learn Workshop

Summary: This workshop focused on how to respond and what to do when navigating supporting a friend, peer, or partner. In this workshop, the 10 signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships were also discussed while talking through tools to navigate helping people around us that may be seeking help. The importance of self-care when supporting those we care about was also discussed.

Finding Peace Event (OCRSM Website)

Finding Peace: Yoga & Meditation

Summary: This workshop focused on meditation and grounding exercises to promote de-stressing during the holiday season. Participants learned beginner yoga poses, breathing techniques, and stress management tips to easily incorporate in their daily routine in collaboration with SkyTerps, a mindfulness student organization. OCRSM also provided snack and de-stress care kits.

Love Language Lab

Summary: This workshop focused on learning and understanding one’s love language. It was an opportunity for participants to understand what they do and don't like in relationships, both romantically and socially. During this workshop, OCRSM discussed how understanding one’s love language can help them navigate healthy relationships and communicate boundaries. A love language quiz was provided along with a discussion during this event. There was also a “build your own love” response station based on the participant’s love language.

Healthy Friendships Matter: Healthy Platonic Connections with the 10 signs of Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships

Summary: This workshop focused on identifying the 10 signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and what consent is and what it is not. Students were able to decorate and write cards with positive affirmations and discuss what practicing healthy consent means to them.
