Live Training & Education 

To support the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct's ("the OCRSM") main mission of fostering learning and working environments free from all forms of discrimination and harassment, the OCRSM conducts compliance training presentations, both in person and virtually, on a variety of topics for offices, departments, and student groups across campus. From July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, the OCRSM conducted a total of 127 compliance training presentations and trained an estimated number of 3,754* students, staff, and faculty across campus on topics related to Title IX and civil rights education and response.

* Presentations and training topics ranged from the OCRSM overview, UMD Title IX/Civil Rights overview, supportive measures overview, pregnant and parenting student resources, and others. 
** The OCRSM facilitated a variety of trainings and presentations for groups on campus on topics such as healthy/unhealthy relationship signs, setting boundaries and practicing open communication, the "isms" in the workplace and navigating difficult situations in the workplace, and others, upon request. 


Campus-Wide Awareness Events 

As part of its educational and outreach initiatives in the last year, the OCRSM hosted, sponsored and/or participated in a total of 43 campus-wide events. This included tabling at resource fair events, co-sponsoring campus-wide initiatives, and facilitating workshops. These initiatives reached an estimated number of 6,200 students, staff and faculty.

* The OCRSM participated in and/or sponsored events with campus partners such as the Sexual Assault Prevention Committee (SAPC), Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence (CARE), Title IX Student Advisory Board (TIXSAB), Bias Incident Support Services (BISS), Graduate Student Government (GSG), One Love UM, Rights & Responsibilities (R&R) at the Department of Resident Life, and others.
** The OCRSM participated in campus-wide initiatives such as Maryland Day, My Maryland Fair New Student Orientations, new student orientations and resources fairs hosted by a variety of colleges and departments in the beginning of both the Fall and Spring semesters, New Faculty Orientation Information Fair, Graduate Student Welcome, Fall Welcome FreeFest, First Look Fair, Quelcome, Self-care Fair, and others.

One signature event that the OCRSM hosts is "Tea with Title IX." This is an annual meet & greet event during Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April that welcomes the campus community to stop by and interact with the members of the OCRSM while enjoying refreshments. For this event in April 2023, the OCRSM prepared 75 self-care kits for participants that attended to take home. 


Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) April 2023

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is an annual national campaign to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. The Sexual Assault Prevention Committee ("SAPC"), which is co-chaired by Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence ("CARE") and the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct ("the OCRSM"), leads and gathers representatives from student organizations and departments across campus to come together and create a calendar of events for this campus-wide initiative. Click on the arrows of the slideshow below to browse the advertisement flyers that were utilized during SAAM in April 2023.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) October 2022

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is an annual national campaign to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to raise awareness of the potential signs of domestic violence. The Sexual Assault Prevention Committee ("SAPC"), which is co-chaired by Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence ("CARE") and the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct ("OCRSM"), leads and gathers representatives from student organizations and departments across campus to come together and create a calendar of events for this campus-wide initiative. 


Workshops Hosted by the OCRSM

In collaboration with One Love UM, a student organization on campus that focuses on spreading education and awareness of the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships, the OCRSM hosted a series of hour-long lunch & learn workshops for the campus community during the fall and spring semesters of the 2022-2023 academic year.

Each lunch & learn workshop focused on a different theme, and the interactive workshops allowed for conversations around healthy and unhealthy signs for different types and aspects of relationships. Click on the arrows of the slideshow below to browse the variety of themes for the lunch & learn workshops that were a part of this series.

They're a 10 But... Workshop*
Summary: This workshop focused on educating participants about the 10 signs of a healthy and unhealthy relationship to serve as a foundation to understand how they navigate social, romantic, familial, and other relationships.

Behind the Post Workshop
Summary: This workshop centered around educating participants of the potential social media has for skewing the view of the relationships that surround us and social media’s influence on individuals' decisions to stay in unhealthy relationships while providing participants with safety strategies to navigate digital content and social media. This event occurred in November 2022 and Lean on Me UMD, a student organization on campus that aims to provide UMD students with non-crisis, peer-to-peer text-based emotional support, joined as a collaborator.

Keeping up with the Family Workshop
Summary: This discussion-based workshop covered familial relationships and taught participants how to, first, recognize One Love’s 10 signs of a healthy and unhealthy relationship in their familial relationships as well as how to be aware of how familial relationships influence how the individuals navigate other types of relationships, such as peer and romantic relationships. This event occurred in November 2022.

Love Languages & Safety Planning
Summary: This workshop educated participants on identifying the connection between the 10 signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and the different love languages. Additionally, this workshop guided participants through exercises on creating safety planning strategies that work for them when entering and exiting different types of relationships. This event occurred in February 2023.

Boundary Setting & the 10 Signs Workshop
Summary: This workshop discussed the challenges that participants may experience around setting boundaries and led them through strategies for how to begin the process of setting boundaries for different types of relationships and how to feel empowered when enforcing boundaries once they are set. This event occurred in March 2023.

Self Love Workshop*
Summary: This workshop focused on reflection exercises that encouraged participants to, first, fully welcome and embrace their relationship with themselves. Additionally, this workshop led participants through a discussion around self-love and what healthy communication looks like with oneself, as well as how to recognize the 10 signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships when practicing self-love.
